An Elder Must Be
Drawing from 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Pastor Joel examines the God-ordained qualifications for the office of elder or overseer in the church. The central argument is that God's standard for church leadership is rooted not in academic credentials, years of experience, or natural charisma, but in character. Of the sixteen qualities Paul lists for an elder, only one is an ability -- the ability to teach -- while all others address who the person is at their core. Pastor Joel also establishes the parallel between leading a household and leading a church, affirms the nobility of desiring the office of elder, and warns against hasty ordination of new converts. Throughout, he emphasizes that God-designed order in the church exists for the health of the body and that leaders must be people of proven, consistent character both inside and outside the church.
