Righteousness Through Faith
In this sermon from Philippians 3, Pastor Joel explores the transformative truth that righteousness before God comes not through personal achievement, religious pedigree, or works of the flesh, but solely through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul confronts false teachers (Judaizers) who were teaching that salvation required keeping the Mosaic law in addition to faith in Christ. Using his own impressive credentials as a Pharisee—his heritage, zealous law-keeping, and persecution of the church—Paul demonstrates that even the most enviable religious accomplishments are worthless compared to knowing Christ. Paul counted all his former gains as "loss" and "rubbish" for the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus experientially. Pastor Joel emphasizes that believers must continually be reminded of foundational truths, reject confidence in the flesh, and pursue an ever-deepening experiential knowledge of God through faith. True circumcision is of the heart, marked by worship in the Spirit, glorying in Christ alone, and putting no confidence in human effort. Paul's desire was not just to be saved, but to know Christ more intimately, experience His resurrection power, share in His sufferings, and die to sin daily.
