Shadow or Substance
In this sermon from Colossians 2:16-23, Pastor Joel addresses the critical distinction between the shadows of Old Testament law and the substance found in Christ. He warns against two dangerous extremes: legalism (attempting to earn God's favor through rule-keeping) and mysticism (seeking spiritual authority through visions and experiences). His core message emphasizes that spiritual growth comes not from human effort, self-denial, or adherence to dietary laws and Sabbath regulations, but from abiding in Christ as the vine. The law served as a prophetic shadow pointing forward to Jesus, who fulfilled it perfectly. Believers are complete in Christ and should reject any teaching that adds requirements to simple faith in Him. Pastor Joel explains that true spiritual vitality comes from being connected to Jesus as our source of life, not from conforming to man-made religious systems or attempting to refine our flesh through our own efforts.
